Winterising a holiday-let hot tub in the South Hams

Covered hot tub on a quiet South Hams deck in soft winter light

Coastal Devon winters are milder than further north, but they still punish neglected spas. Freeze–thaw, wet covers, and long empty weeks can damage kit or leave a filthy spring start. Hosts need a deliberate plan — not cover-and-hope.

Two valid winter strategies

  1. Full winterisation — drain, protect lines, and rest the spa until spring
  2. Reduced-use care — keep the spa running with lighter chemistry and visit cadence

Which is right depends on whether you still take winter guests in Dartmouth or Modbury, and how exposed the deck is to wind and frost.

Full winterisation checklist

  • Balance and clean before draining where practical
  • Follow manufacturer drain and blow-down guidance
  • Protect pillows, covers, and exposed fittings
  • Leave the cover clean and supported so water can’t pool heavily
  • Document the status for co-hosts and insurers

Our seasonal commissioning & winterisation visits handle this as one appointment.

If you keep the spa open

Keep sanitiser under control — idle water still goes stale. Filters still clog from dust and leaves. Schedule lighter hot tub servicing rather than disappearing until Easter.

Spring commissioning matters

Opening badly is how summer starts with foamy water and weak heat. Commissioning should include filters, water balance, heat verification, and a cover check before first guests. Properties around Ivybridge and cooler valleys especially benefit from booking early.

Book before the rush

Spring diaries fill once Easter searches spike. Arrange hot tub maintenance early, or see how we work on the gallery and across the South Hams.

What we actually do

  • Turnovers

    Visits that fit the calendar

We time service around Friday changeovers and midweek top-ups, so the next guests get clear water — not a half-done chemical chase.

    Our services
  • Chemistry

    Programmes cleaners can follow

Sanitiser, pH, and alkalinity written down. Peak Salcombe weeks empty bromine overnight; the dosing plan should match that pace.

    Chemical programmes
  • Breakdowns

    When heat or jets fail

Send the error code and next arrival. We diagnose heaters, pumps, and controllers on site and say whether it’s a reset, a part, or a fuller repair.

  • Visit-led

Quote after we see the tub

No hard package prices from a photo. On the visit we check filters, cover, shell, and how the spa is used between guests — then quote from there.

  • Seasons

    Summer cadence, winter sense

Filter deep cleans before school holidays, tighter summer visits, and honest winterisation when the house sits quieter.

    How we work
  • Local

    Across the South Hams

From Kingsbridge we cover Totnes, Dartmouth, Salcombe, Modbury, Ivybridge, and the estuary and coastal villages between.
